About Hair Loss - Other Causes
Hattingen Hair Transplantation Break
While Androgenetic Alopecia accounts for the vast majority of thinning hair or balding cases, there are some other less common causes and conditions that may lead to hair loss. While some causes are temporary, in a small proportion of cases some may unfortunately lead to permanent hair loss.

Temporary Hair Loss

Alopecia Areata: is generally thought to be an auto immune disorder, where the body attacks its own hair. It is characterized by "patchy" or small circular areas of hair loss in different areas of the scalp. In approximately 80% of the cases it is an isolated event and hair re-grows. In 20% of cases the hair loss becomes permanent. Hair Transplantation is not advisable when the disease is still active as the hair transplanted into the areas affected by Alopecia Areata can also suffer the effects of the auto immune disorder.
Telogen Effluvium: characterized by hair loss and thinning throughout the scalp. While its exact cause is unknown it can be caused by emotional and/ or physical stress. Childbirth or extreme dieting can be a cause of this condition that is usually temporary and reversible. Although it appears more commonly in women men can also be affected. In some cases the condition can become chronic and last for up to two years. Hair transplantation is not recommended especially when the Telogen Effluvium is still active, because the transplanted hair is not immune to its effects and most often the condition improves by itself without the need for surgical intervention.
Anagen Effluvium: generally due to internally administered medications, such as chemotherapy agents, or radiation therapy in cancer that poison the growing hair follicle. The hair loss is temporary and hair re-growth begins after completion of therapy. Hair Transplantation is not necessary.
Traction Alopecia: hair loss resulting from repeated and prolonged tension on the hair caused by wearing certain hairstyles such as tight braids, or hair weaving. If the hairstyle is changed in the early stages, the problem can be solved. However hair loss can become permanent if the hairstyle is worn persistently. If permanent hair loss has occurred, it can be properly treated by hair transplantation.
Trichotillomania: hair loss caused by persistent pulling or twisting of ones own hair. Hair loss can become permanent like in traction alopecia if pulling or twisting does not stop. In such a case hair transplantation can be an option, but the transplanted hair can suffer the same fate if pulling resumes.

Permanent Hair Loss

Scars - Can be caused by trauma, burns, and sometimes after certain surgical procedures (e.g. after facelift or brow lift surgery). Permanent hair loss of this type can be treated by hair transplantation.
Aging can also cause hair loss known as Senile alopecia. It is characterized by thinning of hair over the entire scalp and body. It affects men and women usually after they reach 50 years of age.
Other factors such as thyroid abnormalities, hormonal imbalances, vitamin deficiencies or systemic diseases can also be incriminated. While it is not possible to describe here every form of hair loss we feel that it is important that every person experiencing hair loss consult a dermatologist as often hair transplants may not be the answer.
