About Hair Loss - Androgenetic Alopecia
Hattingen Hair Transplantation Break
Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common form of scalp hair loss in both men and women. It is characterised by a progressive loss of hair on the top and crown area of the scalp. As the name implies (androgenetic hair loss is genetic in nature) the primary factors responsible are genetics and hormones .This is to say that your hair's future is largely determined before you're even born. Specifically, baldness is caused by a genetically inherited sensitivity of hair follicles to normally circulating male hormones.
The hormone involved is testosterone, which in the presence of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (found in and around hair follicles and the dermal papilla) is chemically converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). However, by itself this more potent derivative of testosterone, DHT, does not cause balding.
Hattingen Hair Transplantation Spacer Hair loss occurs when hair follicles are genetically determined to be susceptible to the effects of DHT. This combination causes hair follicles to shrink, lose pigmentation, become finer and ultimately disappear. The genetic information responsible for balding may be inherited from either parent, and may be expressed in both males and more rarely females.

Your follicles have also been genetically programmed as to when, where and how much baldness (if any), you'll experience in your lifetime. Fortunately the combination of genetically inherited sensitivity to androgens usually only affects the areas on top of the scalp. The hair on the sides and back of the scalp is considered permanent hair because it lacks the genetic sensitivity to DHT, and thus continues to grow for the rest of your life. This fact implies that the fate of your hair can be altered or compensated for with effective hair loss treatments.
At Hattingen Hair Transplantation we are able to harvest this permanent (unaffected) hair, and transplant it to the balding or thinning areas of the scalp, where it will continue to grow -for life. This is the basic principle of hair transplantation, known as "donor dominance".
