About Hair Loss
In both men and women, hair loss is really quite a common problem. Before exploring the possibilities of restoring hair growth, it is important to understand how hair normally grows and further, explain what causes hair loss.
Normal Hair Growth
Hair loss is a natural daily occurrence. The average person is born with 100.000-150.000 scalp hairs that are genetically programmed to follow a cycle that includes growth, resting and shedding. A person with normal hair growth will shed 50-100 hairs per day, but most hair re-grows because the follicle remains. Baldness occurs when shedding significantly exceeds growth. Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss although other causes can also lead to thinning hair or baldness.
Follicular Units
Hair does not exit the scalp individually. Upon close inspection you will notice that hair exits the scalp in groupings of 1-4 (and rarely 5) hairs, with an average of 2.3 hairs per grouping. These groups of hair are known as Follicular Units and they are considered distinct physiological entities (each containing a sebaceous gland, muscle insertions, and a surrounding collection of blood vessels, nerves and binding collagen fibres). These Follicular Units grow in an irregular pattern.
